SPACE ANXIETY TREATMENT

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions

We’re proud to offer SPACE, an evidence-based treatment program developed at Yale University to help parents support their children with anxiety, OCD, and related challenges.

Unlike traditional therapy models that focus directly on the child, SPACE works through the parents. In this approach, parents take an active role in guiding change by learning practical strategies that help their child feel safe, confident, and capable of managing anxiety independently.

How It Works

When children struggle with anxiety, it’s natural for parents to want to help by offering reassurance, stepping in to prevent distress, or adjusting routines to make things easier. Sometimes that means saying, “I’ll stay with you,” or “You don’t have to go.” While these responses come from care and protection, they can unintentionally teach a child that they need others to feel safe or capable. Over time, this can keep anxiety in place rather than helping it fade.

SPACE helps parents recognize and gently shift these patterns. By making small, consistent changes, parents create an environment where children can begin to face fears, tolerate discomfort, and build resilience.

Why It Helps

When parents change their responses to anxiety, children begin to feel more confident and independent. Over time, they learn that they can handle uncertainty, face fears, and manage uncomfortable feelings on their own.

This approach has been shown to:

  • Decrease anxiety symptoms in children and teens
  • Reduce family stress and conflict
  • Empower parents with effective tools they can use every day

Through the SPACE program, parents gain a deeper understanding of anxiety and how their responses can either reinforce or reduce it. This creates a calmer, more connected home environment for the entire family.

What Parents Learn

Since SPACE works through the parent, children and teens do not need to participate directly. This makes it an excellent option for families whose child may be hesitant to engage in therapy or who need additional support alongside ongoing treatment.

By focusing on how parents respond to anxiety, SPACE builds a stronger foundation for meaningful, lasting change at home. Parents often find that as they make these shifts, their own confidence grows, stress levels decrease, and family interactions become calmer and more connected.

Parents will learn how to:

  • Develop a clear understanding of what causes and maintains their child’s anxious thoughts and behaviors. Recognize how certain patterns, even caring ones, can unintentionally keep anxiety going and how gentle, consistent changes at home can help ease it.
  • Respond with calm confidence instead of constant reassurance, helping their child feel safe and capable.
  • Gradually reduce accommodations that maintain anxiety while remaining warm and supportive.
  • Model emotional regulation and problem-solving to help their child develop strong coping skills.
  • Strengthen family communication and create a consistent, secure environment for growth.

Next Step

If your child struggles with anxiety, you do not have to face it alone. SPACE can help your family create calm, connection, and lasting change.
